has gloss	eng: The Mayaimis were a tribe of Native Americans who lived around Lake Okeechobee (the Belle Glade culture area) in Florida from the beginning of the Common Era until the 17th or 18th century. The group took their name from the lake, which was then called Mayaimi. Mayaimi meant "big water" in the language of the Mayaimis, Calusa, and Tequesta. The origin of the language has not been determined, as the meaning of only ten words were recorded before extinction. The current name of Okeechobee for the lake is derived from the Hitchiti word meaning "big water". The Mayaimis have no linguistic or cultural relationship with the Miamis of Ohio. Miami, Florida is named for the Mayaimis.

Ime ovih Indijanaca dolazi iz jezika Tequesta ili Calusa Indijanaca u značenju big water , sa kojima vjerojatno predstavljaju staru populaciju, po svoj prilici aravačkog porijekla, čije bi srodnike trebalo tražiti među Taino plemenima Velikih Antila.

Название племени происходит от озера, которое тогда также называлось Майяими, букв. «большая вода» на языках майяими, калуса и теквеста (текеста). Нынешнее название озера Окичоби также означает «большая вода», но на языке хитчити. Племя майяими не имеет отношения к племени майами (миами) в штате Огайо.
