De rolschaats werd voor het eerst in 1863 door zijn uitvinder James Plimpton aan het grote publiek getoond. Deze uitvinding is echter serieus te betwisten. Plimpton was degene die als eerste een patent nam. Een voorloper van de rolschaats was de in-line rolschaats, in 1743 uitgevonden door Jean Joseph Merlin uit Hoei in Wallonië. Ook de Fransmannen Vanlede en Garcin hadden een rolschaats gecreëerd in resp. 1790 en 1815. In 1823 kwam de Brit Tyerin ook al met een rolschaats op de proppen. In 1824 bezat Londen al overdekte rolschaatsbanen. De opening van de baan in Cincinnati in 1867 luidde in Amerika een bloeiperiode in. |

Från 1860-talet hade rullskridskor i regel hjulen parvis bredvid varandra under sulan. Hjulparen var konstruerade så att de svängde om skridskon lutades, jämför med skateboard. Bromsade gjorde man med hjälp av gummiklossar framför och/eller bakom hjulen. Bromsklossarna fram kunde även användas att ta fart med, särskilt för den som var van vid konståkningsskridskor med taggar på spetsarna. Rullskridskor fanns både som hela skor med hjul och som plattor med hjul som man spände fast under vanliga skor. På 1980-talet utvecklades i USA rullskridskor med alla hjul på rad, så kallade inlines, så att användandet närmare efterliknade den vanliga skridskons skenor och teknik. |
