has glosseng: Edo (or, with the tone marks: Èdó, also called or Benin) is a Benue-Congo language spoken primarily in Edo State, Nigeria. It was and remains the primary language of the Edo people of the ancient Igodomigodo Empire renamed Edo by Oba Ewuare and ever since the Edos refer to themselves as Oviedo meaning born of Edo (also child of Edo). The Edo empires headquaters was stationed in Benin City (unrelated to the people of modern day Republic of Benin, formerly called Dahomey). The Edo Empire was corrupted to Benin Empire by the Portuguese who encountered at the port the Itshekhiri word for Benin City, Ubinu. In the Nigerian pidgin spoken widely across southern Nigeria, Benin is simply Bini. The earliest recorded contact between the Edos and the Portuguese started in the 1400s with the 1472 entry by the Portuguese captain Ruy de Siqueira.
