Es wurde 2006 von der Seed Media Group für englischsprachige Blogs erstellt, um das öffentliche Verständnis für Wissenschaft zu verbessern. Nach eigenen Angaben zählt ScienceBlogs.com monatlich 2,5 Mio. Besucher. die zuerst von Hubert Burda Media und seit Mitte 2009 von Glam Media betrieben wird. Zu den Autoren zählen hauptsächlich Wissenschaftler von Universitäten und Forschungsinstitutionen; darunter Doktoranden, Post-Docs und Professoren. Ausserdem führen auch einige Wissenschaftsjournalisten eigenständige Weblogs innerhalb des Portals.
