Přitom nevyžaduje pro svou práci ATP. Pokud je kanál určený pro průchod iontů, používá se konkrétnější označení iontový kanál, molekuly vody transportují akvaporiny, a podobně. Mnohé kanály jsou schopné se otevírat a zavírat na základě určitého signálu z nitra nebo z okolí buňky.
