has glosseng: The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is an independent cancer research organisation based in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1909 as a small research department of the Royal Marsden Hospital, and currently occupies two sites, one in central London and one in Sutton, south of London. According to its vision statement, its aim is "...that people may live their lives free of the fear of cancer as a life-threatening disease..." . Together with The Royal Marsden, it forms Europes largest comprehensive cancer centre, and is internationally renowned for the quality of its science. (see page 61)It is also a constituent college of the University of London, England . In December 2008, the ICR was ranked as the UKs leading academic research centre by the Times Higher Educations Table of Excellence , based on the results of the Higher Education Funding Councils Research Assessment Exercise.
